After I got through installing SP2 on my laptop all links to the RDP client
disappeared! I had to add shortcuts to mstsc.exe on my desktop. Anybody had a
similar experience?

Just to clarify - the shortcuts were deleted instead of just pointing
to a dead link?

So you had manually created .rdp files on your desktop? Those aren't
shortcuts. What links did you have?
