Using vegas video 4 on a new xp install

When encoding to divx 5.2, audio stays at uncompressed pcm.
If I change it to mp3, the encode fails.

I installed lame and fraunhoffer, both fail.

There is one default option from the drop down menu in vegas for mp3.
Maximum howerver is 56 kbit 24 khz. The divx encode does not
fail using this setting...but if you want more quality, you are out of
luck...

Am I missing something here ?
The default mp3 support in xp is fraunhoffer as I checked before I
installed it. After installation, I then had access to the higher
encoding rates but as mentioned, the vegas encode dies when I try to
use these.....

any help here appreciated...
