I have been recording TV programs on my desktop, editing out the
commercials and burning them onto a CD. I plan on watching the
Seinfeld, Frasier, Cheers, etc shows this summer when we stay overnite
on our boat on a laptop. The problem is that this is very time
consuming, the quality on the CD is terrible, and one out of three of
the files ends up with a loud buzz throughout the show.
Is it possible to bypass the CDs and just transfer the Mpeg files
directly from the desktop to the laptop? I figure I can get 3 half hour
shows per gig.

Sure it's no problem, just a matter of space on your laptop's
hard drive.

But you shouldn't see any change in your MPEG playback,
just because you put them on a CD. Once it is in a digital
format there should be no loss. Nor should it be "very
time consuming". You could have a problem with your CD
Burner or Player.

Have you tried copying the .mpg files from the CD to
your laptop hard drive and playing them from the hard
drive? If that works you could replace the ones you
start out with on your hard drive, using CDs, leaving
more room for other things.

Luck;
Ken

I'm not sure what is causing the buzzing. If I play the mpeg file, it
sounds ok. But after I edit it (Pinnacle editing software) I end up
with this loud humming sound in the background.

Sounds like Pinnacle software is the problem, huh?

Don't feel bad. I bought Dazzle hardware and VOB brand CD burning
software. Both were purchased by Pinnacle. Both were useful to a point
but inundated with bugs that made them aggravating beyond my tolerance
level. Seems to be a common theme amongst the Pinnacle product lines.

Both Dazzle and Pinnacle have very spotty reps. There are a
few who seem to have no problems with them, while many others
report them as total disasters.

It's somewhat odd that a hum is being introduced during editing,
most of the time it's a problem introduced into the analog audio.
I would check that all of the sound "mixers" in both Pinnacle and
your system have muted any inputs you aren't using, at the time.
Make sure none are "maxed out" leave a little space at the top of
the sliders. Recheck any audio processing that Pinnacle is doing.
