My video editing software (Studio 9)can only handle type 2 avi's
I am considering buying a small digital camera (Canon SD300) that has
the ability to record full frame 640 X 480 avi's at 29.97 frame rates.
I emailed Canon and asked them what type of avi's this camera records,
type 1 or type 2, and they responded that the AVI files taken with the
PowerShot SD300 are the "AVI/M-JPEG file types."

Does anyone know whether these AVI files (the AVI/M-JPEG files.) are
type 1 or type 2?
Thanks for your help!

The camera doesn't record avi files, it records a digital video stream.

The software that downloads the video creates a computer file which
contains the video stream.

The format of the file is determined by the software; some software
lets you select from several formats.

I don't know the difference between type 1 and 2 AVI files, but I have
successfully edited video from a Canon SD200 using Studio 9. The only
minor problem I noted was that the playback of the SD200 video clips in
the preview panel makes them look tall and skinny. Since the frame rate
is 30 FPS instead of 29.97, you also get a warning, but the resultant
files and burned DVDs are fine. I've also intermixed standard video
from a DV camcorder into the edit with no problems. I did not use any
conversion software, I copied the video files directly from the SD
memory card and opened with Studio 9. The files from the camera are
AVI files.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

The camera records .AVI files directly to the storage media card,
you can then read the card directly with any PC with the
appropriate CODEC installed. You don't need to use the clunky
and slow camera cable to PC connection at all.

I know you meant well, Gino, don't take offense...

You know, I hadn't noticed that the OP was talking about a still
camera.

My bad, so if I want to take offense, it has to be at me :-)

Anyway, we need to keep us posters honest, so thanks for the
correction.
