Hi, I'm just getting started on audio and video editing and have some
rudimentary tools for the purposes. I was wondering if anyone knows if
AVI files store audio tracks separately of each other. I've come across
a video file with the default audio layered underneath some dubbing.
Would the dubbing be layered over the main layer in a manner that would
make it possible to extract it? Also does anyone know of a piece of
software that would manage this task if it's possible? Thanks in advance.

AVI = AudeoVideoInterleave = alternating frames of audio/video
Everything is all mixed in one file (no, I don't know the tech
details, just that everything is in one the file)

virtualdub or virtualdubmod can tell you the number
of audio channels and save them to WAV if you wish.
In the case you mention above,it's highly likely
that the dubbing and original audio are the same
track, unfortunately.
On the other hand, some foreign language mpg files
have the original sound on one channel, and the dubbed
on the other. Two separate mono soundtracks.
When it's made into a vcd, you can choose which one
to hear.
