I have Road Runner internet connection. Road Runner's SMTP server works fine if I send email when I connect to the cable modem but the Road Runner's SMTP will not send the e-mail if I using other internet connection when I am not home. Is there any free SMTP server I can use to send e-mail when I use other internet connection. Thanks.
I am not familiar with Road Runner, but I think I get the gihst of the problem. One solution albiet a bit unusual would be to run your own SMTP server on your system. If you are running Windows 2000 or better, you already have an SMTP server installed, its just not configured. Configure it using your current IP address and point your e-mail app towards your own IP/SMTP server.
This will work because whenever I install a DB I often use the local SMTP for mailing alerts and notifications.
but that solution potentially introduces more problems. If the cable connetion has a dynamic IP then you have to run some sort of DDNS application, plus you have to leave your PC on, etc.
It's always the one thing you never suspected.
I pulled this off roadrunner's support site for ya:
"Checking Road Runner E-mail from Another ISP
To check your e-mail from another ISP, first setup an additional account in your e-mail application using the following settings:
Off-network POP3 Server: pop-server.neb.rr.com
Off-network SMTP Server: Check with your alternate ISP for their SMTP Server name.
Note: If you retrieve your e-mail from a computer other than your own, it will be removed from the server and loaded on to the computer you are using. To keep the mail on the server so that you can retrieve it again from your home machine, select the Leave Mail on Server option within your particular e-mail client. However, keep in mind that messages "expire" or are deleted from the server after 60 days."
