Hello,
Could you please let me know how big a deal it is buying a harddrive and
a firewire enclosure and installing the harddrive in it? Is it a no
brainer? Are some enclosures easier to use than another? Any pointers
and suggestions were sure be appreciated. It just seems like if it is
not a big deal, I could save some money. If it is better to stay with
one already put together, then please let me know.
Thank you

Not a big deal at all. You will have to format the drive, which is also not
a big deal.

On a scale of 1-10, it is maybe a 2.5 Certainly on the same order
as installing a hard drive into a computer. Hard to recommend
specific make/model as they seem to be commodity, generic items
and they come and go without notice. You likely have access to
different ones than I do.

Only caveats I have observed are to be wary about heat buildup.
I'd use one with a small fan, or at least a metal one that would
help sink the heat away, etc.

I've installed 6 of these as back up drives for student NLEs and have had no
problems whatsoever. I've used both the ADS Dual Link drive kit
(firewire/USB - # DLX185) and the cheaper USB 2.0 Hard Drive kit (# USBX835)
and 200GB Western Digital drives. Both models have built-in fans and work
like a charm :-)

As others said, about the same skill as installing a hard drive to the PC
and formatting a blank drive.
I have done a few and am very happy with them, however in researching the
ready made ones yesterday for a friend who doesn't want an assembled one for
her mac, i noticed the prices had come down to very reasonable levels.
In fact there were some great deals which included backup software and even
one touch buttons to create backup images.
I like this one in particulare with an instant savings coupon at newegg.com
and "Retrospect" backup utilities software.
It's only $145 after instant discount, not bad for a pre-made 160gb external
drive, right?

GoodLuck either way, :)
