I am looking for a good capture device. I got one with my Dell 8300 but I
seem to be getting a lot of bad frames - 1 or 2 per second is not
unreasonable. I got a firewire card with it. The card has 2 firewire ports
and what looks like a game controller port. The device plugs into what I am
calling the game controller port - the connector looks like it has 3 rows of
5 holes. For example, the top half of someone's head is messed up and
moved about half a head to the side. the next bunch of frames are okay.
Others have lines all oner the frame. Most of the problems are one or two
bad frames in a row

I assume (perhaps this is bad) that it is the capture device. Consequently
I am looking for a better one. The reviews for the Dazzle 150 don't look
too good - then again, perhaps they might be sour grapes. I cant find
reviews for the Canopus 110 or 300.

I was hoping someone here might hav eperience using a good capture device
I have a P4 3G, 250 storage, 512 RAM

I got an AVerMedia DVD EZMaker PCI for about 40 dollars (Canadian).
The included software is not very feature rich, the support is bad (you won't
get a reply, they closed my issue without response, and only answered
once I complained to the company's e-mail address).

However, the card is good. Capturing 720x576 PAL at 25fps at good
consumer quality (uses a Philips chip). I tried various capture
software - the best I found was FlyDS. I captured to DV and could not
see a difference between that and the same video captured using the
FireWire port of my Hi8/Digital8 camcorder.

Mike, respectfully, I don't tolerate a SINGLE dropped frame over a 1 hour
capture. Unless the source materials is particularly poor, I suggest you
demand the same performance of your equipment.

FYI: my first NLE workstation a couple years back was the same system you
have, the Dimension 8300, and it did a fine job of Firewire DV transfers.

I ordered mine with a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 card which had a single
Firewire, 6-pin port and that was connected to a Sony TRV-720 Digital 8mm
camera. I don't know what software you've tried but Windows Movie Maker 2
(free with XP) worked as well for capture as Adobe Premiere Pro with DV-AVI
files.

If your problems persist, give us some more details on your Firewire card,
system configuration and what camera you're using.

In the meantime, visit my "Jerkware" page get make sure you are: Firewalled,
Spyware and Virus Protected.
Then disable every background process you can before capturing/transferring
video and don't attempt to "multi-task" while capturing.

Good luck and let us know how you make out.

C.

I checked the card in device manager.and the capture device said Dell Movie
Studio Video Device. The Firewire ports on the same card are listed as
Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller. The capture
device came with the Dell 8300. I am using Studio 9.4 Plus. My sound cars
is Creative Audegy Audio Processor. I am trying to capture old Home made
VHS tapes. ( I tried a little from a commercial tape with the same results)

OK. You've got a Firewire card.

You have VHS tapes and want to get them into your computer.
Got a Digital-8 or miniDV video camera with a Firewire port and analog
pass-through?

DITCH the Studio software. Use Windows Movie Maker 2. We know the latter
will work, all things being equal. The former is an unknown quantity.

Let us know what you've got for a camera.

I'd put more RAM in the equation as well.

My digital video system is a Presario with Athlon XP 2900+, 1GB RAM,
256MB AGP video card. I am using a Pinnacle USB moviebox for my analog
to digital conversions. The Pinnacle is NOT the greatest thing out
there though.
