Installing Updates

I tried to install Windows security essentials on my new laptop but it was stuck?, not frozen, during the installation. It was installing for an hour so i decided to cancel it. Then the uninstall wouldn't seem to do anything. I left it over night and it still didn't do anything. So I decided to shut the computer down and now its stuck on installing an update(42of78) and it's been like that. Why and how do i fix it?

I got round it by doing a system restore from safe mode (F8 on startup)

I'm just going to shut it off and try it again. If it doesn't work i'll try your advice.

I shut the computer off turned it back on and downloaded what I needed and it's fine now. Thanks anyway.
