I read ADVC100 allows you to output an analog signal as well as DV. So this
means the converter captures uncompressed AVI, correct?

I'll be purchasing one of these converters soon and would like to be able to
capture then edit uncompressed video. Please excuse my ignorance, I have no
experience with converters.

The ADVC-100 takes analog input, converts to DV and outputs via
Firewire. It also takes DV input via Firewire and outputs analog.

No.

No. Only DV (which is compressed 5:1 by definition) I'm reasonably
sure this is mentioned in the description and specifications.

ADVC-100 (and 110 which replaced it and 300 and likely all the
others in the family) all do DV in/out and *not* uncompressed.

Why do you think you need uncompresed? If you video is that good,
perhaps you should consider something more upscale than an
ADVC-100.

Boxes like the Canopus are designed to do 2 things.
1) Convert an analog signal (from a VCR) to a DV signal (which compresses it
at 5:1) and feed that to your computer's NLE system; and
2) Convert a DV signal (already compressed at 5:1) to an analog signal to
feed either a VCR or a monitor.

It doesn't "capture" uncompressed AVI. It captures whatever analog or
digital (IEEE 1394 only) signal you feed into it. If the analog signal
coming in is from a Digital Betacam deck, the resulting signal will still
look better than the same thing coming from a VHS deck.

What are you doing that you need to capture "uncompressed AVI" anyway? The
resulting file size is huge!!

For the original poster - uncompressed video is about 1.6GB per minute of
video.
