Fooling around with Pinnacle Studio 9, I tried out the image stablizer
plugin and noticed that on some clips it works great, on others, it can't be
used because it causes the image to jerk abruptly at a certain point in the
clip. In particular, it seems to have problems with shots that involve
flames shooting out of fireworks mortars at about a 30 degree angle and
clips of a spinning globe with a jumbotron display.

I wonder if the particular plugin from Pinnacle is deficient or is this a
common problem with software that has this feature?

I had similar problems using DynaPel's "Steadyhand" software. In my case,
it was a wedding video and flashes from cameras would cause the stabilizer
to go balistic. The bright scene change was apparently assumed to be
movement and it tried to compensate.

In my situation, I was able to go through the entire video frame by frame
and replace "flash" frames with a copy of the preceding frame. This let the
stabilizer run normally, but it was a huge amount of work and obviously
wouldn't work in most other situations.
