Catholic university drops student health insurance, cites ObamaCare

I thought Obamacare was supposed to reduce costs? :sarcastic:

"A Catholic university in Ohio said Tuesday it is being forced to end a student health insurance program over the Obama administration's contraception mandate and costs associated with other provisions of the health care overhaul.

Franciscan University in Steubenville, Ohio, said it has so far excluded contraceptive services and products from its health insurance policy for students and will not participate in a plan that “requires us to violate the consistent teachings of the Catholic Church on the sacredness of human life.”

In its decision to drop coverage, the school cited the contraception mandate, but also a requirement that the maximum coverage amount be increased to $100,000 for policyholders -- claiming that would have made premiums skyrocket. A university official told Fox News Radio the students’ basic $600 policy was going to double in cost in the fall and triple next year and that the school’s insurance provider said the increases were the result of the federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

"This is putting people in a position where they are having to choose between their faith and their morality, and now an unjust cost," said Mike Hernon, the school’s vice president of advancement. "These sorts of regulations from the government are forcing our hand in a way that's really wrong."

Another consequence is full-time Franciscan undergraduates will no longer be required to carry health insurance, starting in the fall 2012 semester. However, the employee health insurance program will remain unchanged.

“We encourage you to decide how you are going to provide for accidents or illnesses requiring visits to physicians, health clinics or the hospital emergency room while you are a student here,” the school said on its website.

Students now will likely have to be covered through their parents’ policy, though Reuters reported that fewer than 2,000 of the school's 2,500 students had been buying insurance from the university.

Existing student plans expire Aug. 15, and the changes begin in the fall 2012 semester.

The school said students playing intercollegiate sports and studying for a semester in Austria will be covered under different plans.

The Obama administration continues to face a standoff by Catholic organizations opposed to its mandate that religious-based institutions like hospitals and universities provide birth control coverage in their insurance policies, though the administration said the cost could be shifted to the insurance companies for organizations with religious objections.

The Catholic Church views use of contraceptives as morally wrong. Churches themselves already are exempt from the contraceptive coverage mandate.

Fox News Radio's Todd Starnes contributed to this report.

Another troll post. What are you pointing out? What are you trying to discuss? Do you want to have a debate about religious affiliated colleges providing contraceptives for students under their healthcare plan? Because again you seem to be trolling..... and copy pasting.

Seems like the church is way behind the times.....

Why are you making it about me? Are you obscessed with me mingo? Do I need to get a restraining order?

Why not address the article instead of making this personally about me?

Have you ever heard these words?

"Under my healthcare plan, costs are going to go down"

"Under my healthcare plane, if you like your healthcare, then you can keep it. If you like your doctor, you can keep it"

In addition, the headline could easily read:

McDonald's drops employee health insurance, cites ObamaCare (except they got a waiver from the Obama administration)

US Steel drops employee health insurance, cites ObamaCare

Exxon Mobil drops employee health insurance, cites ObamaCare

Company X drops employee health insurance, cites ObamaCare

And I'll tell you something else. The closer we get to fully implementing this abomination you WILL see those headlines. Which is the whole point of Obamacare in the first place.

Eh, I gotta step in. While OMG didn't pose any question or open up his thoughts for an opinion, you calling him a troll is off topic.

As a reminder, everyone keep it about the post. As always, you do not have to post if you disagree with something.

OMG, for sake of argument, when posting such links and article references, provide context of your own for discussion purposes.

I actually did in the OP. Third line before the article starts.

Lead by example riser.

As far as the college dropping insurance I am almost entirely convinced from reading other articles not from fox news that this was a religiously motivated action. Also in the quote you posted it says that less than 2,000 of the 2,500 students would be affected when in fact it is less than 200 of the 2,500 students would be affected by this change. Not sure if this was a typo or what. Where are the other articles about colleges dropping their insurance as well?

No, I think it was the tripling of premiums in the next two years that caused them to drop it. As it will cause many institutions and companies to drop it as well. Which, as I said before, is THE plan. After X years the ONLY option will be single payer. Except for the rich that is.

The school, the private Ave Maria University, is voicing both moral and economic concerns.

If it is about religious reasons, we do have the constitution for that, as we see Obamacare in the high court, not looking all rosy.
This is a private Uni, it is run and funded by private people of certain religious beliefs, beliefs heretofore protected by the constitution, and no one would bother with it.
As Obama thru the Catholics and our constitution under the bus doing this, by not allowing an out.
If hed allowed one, Im sure everything would be OK, but like other things, it is a in your face attitude IMO.
He does everything thru politics, such as dumping his pastor.

This isnt a good thing, nor is Obamacare, especially now, in these times, its a very foolish move, as we ignore the economy and our debt.

My lead and examples are plenty. A simple reminder is sometimes necessary.
