Is there a way to disable autoplay in WinXP Pro when placing a "blank" DVD in
the tray of a DVD burner?
I have disabled all the autoplay functions I can through normal means but
still... when I stick a blank DVD in the tray... WinXP insists on taking a look
and then opening up an empty folder for the drive. While XP is doing this it is
taking over the computer and preventing me from doing anything for several long
seconds.

Unless you identify them, we are likely to suggest things you
have already tried.

This computer is at my work and I'll check when I go in later today. As I recall
though, I've disabled autoplay that associates various applications to the
content of the DVD or CD. I chose "take no action" for every option there was.
Still when a blank DVD or CD is put in the tray the computer chugs and churns
and after maybe 8 seconds opens an empty window / folder for the drive. During
this 8 or so seconds I can't open an application. (like an authoring app) I
click on the app but everything is in slow motion until that drive folder window
opens.
After I posted I goggled around some more and read that "tweakui" may have an
option that will work for me. But I think that means that tweakui is running all
the time. This computer is also used as an encoder and we like to have minimal
background stuff going on.

or
You can use the Group Policy Editor (GUI) to disable Autoplay on CD-ROM
drives, or
disable Autoplay on all drives. It can be configured per computer or per
user. For
more information, run gpedit.msc, navigate to the desired section (Computer
Configuration or User Configuration), then see:

Administrative Templates > System: "Disable Autoplay"
[read the text on the "Explain" tab]

8 seconds? You're lucky... takes my system 30 to 45 seconds to realize
a disc has been inserted! (But then again, my factory installed WinXP
has always been quirky)

TweakUI does not run all the time. It is a control panel extension
allowing you to set some "hidden" options, set the options you want and
close it.

I ran the "Group Policy Editor" and disabled Autoplay. Oddly the way it's worded
is that you enable... disable of autoplay. This fixes the problem of the empty
window / folder for the DVD/CD drive from opening. But there is still that disk
looking cursor while Windows takes a long hard look and delays anything else I
may be trying to do for those moments. I think it's a windows thing.

Heheheheh. I noticed that too - the "enable the disable" thing. Kinda
quirky.

I actually "disabled the disable" a while back because I was having problems
with the DVD drive not automatically realizing it was empty or full.

Software that was supposed to access the drive couldn't...
Maybe this was unrelated to Autoplay but I don't think so.

I'd like to hear from folks who try this little hack and see what effect it
has for them.
