Anyone recommend a good (and free?) video editor that can edit mpegs,
avis, and other formats? Looking to do simple edits like split, trim,
chop, etc.

There is not a large inventory of MPG capabible editors. The Womble
editor or another called Video-Redo are often mentioned and affordable.

Try Womble multimedia producer.
It is not free but has a good 30 day trial. And if it does the trick it is
not to expensive.
