If you're looking for composition software check out Finale. It's the
industry leader.
If you're just looking to do some audio editing check out SONAR 4 or
Sound Forge 8. I prefer the former. There's also a free program
that's fanatastic called Audacity.

Sibelius is indeed another fine choice.
However, I'd greatly appreciate your source that indicates that it's
the industry leader (other than obvious advertisers of course).

Aren't you following the thread? If someone tells you its the standard
for music composers, then it's a good bet that the answer to your
question is "music composing".
Protools is the music industry's software in just about every single
music studio here in LA.
I spend a fair amount of time in ADR studios, and every single studio
I've been in is using ProTools. I think I asked, "why protools.." at
some point and everyone in the studio looked at me a laughed. So, I
guess that answered my question when I asked it...

If the OP wants to give Protools a shot, he should download and
install Protools Free and see how he likes it.

It certainly seems to me to be the "industrial-strength"
music engraving application available today. The list
of celebrity users is also impressive.

You may need to offer more details of your requirements.
For example, do you need MIDI capability, or just analog
recorded files (WAV, etc.)?

Pro Tools Free is very little like PTLE or TDM. It only runs on older
Operating Systems.
I run PTLE and I don't like Free.

This is changing the subject a bit.. but I too have some friends over at
Intel, and generally they are pretty excited about the changes too. He
tells me that the xCode tools core has a really good intel compiler
already built in.
Personally, I have mixed feeling, but I do believe it is "the right
thing to do". We were never going to see any G5 powerbooks, and lets
face it.. smaller and faster IS the future. And IBM really dropped the
ball, plus Microsoft demand for PPC chips now probably just pissed off Jobs.

The free versions don't run on OS X and they bear only a vague resemblance to
PTLE and the bigger TDM PT.
