My friend burned a dvd using a standalone dvd recorder (I think lite-on
brand). But the dvd is un-watchable in any dvd player.

I put it in my dvd drive and use iso-buster to look at it. It contains an
open session with 5 tracks. However, isobuster greyed out the extract mpg
frames. All i can do is extract original data, which created 5 .tao files on
my hard disk.

How do I extract anything useful from these .tao files?

You may need to get your friend to finalize the DVD.
