Several times of late when editing my video I get a blue screen & a
waring that windows is shutting down my PC, to avoid damage. Whats'
this all about & can this condition really damage your machine?

Thanks in advance

This is called "the blue screen of death" or BSOD and is a well known
feature of Windows. It's very unlikely that you've damaged anything,
though you might lose unsaved data.

Likely caused by a hardware problem such as flaky
memory or intermittent power supply, etc. etc. etc.
Almost certainly NOT related to editing video (or
any other particular computer software task.)

I get the same message under these circumstances. I have attempted to
install two different sound cards in a new AMD 64 bit CPU computer. After
the install the card works fine on first use, i.e., when playing a file.
However, upon hitting play the second time, either in the same software or
in other software (video editing) I get the same message. I have assumed it
is a driver conflict. Just haven't had time yet to try the various slots
and reserve IRQs, etc. to see if I can get working. It is a pain.

Nope. For me, it's Audition and Vegas.

The Blue Screen of Death became less common with Windows XP. It should
give you an error code or something like Error 0E AT xxxxxxx in module
yyyyyy.

There is a utility called DR WATSON. If you run that it tries to trap
errors and gives a more detailed report.

Oftem but not always a driver issue.

Certain error conditions can cause actual damage but it is rare.

Actually, the STOP code reveals the problem. One of the first things on a BSOD shows the following:

STOP 0x00000000

You have to substitue the 0s for your code (ex. 0x00000EA)

Do a google search for that code it will tell you what it means.

Yeah, and Googling for that, still gives you 30 possibilities sometimes.
Very helpful, those error-codes :(

Hey Steve,
What if because you opened both and certain amount of system memory is used
caused error?
Did you also try running many other things that uses system resources just
to be sure?
Just a thought but could also be bad drivers, aren't IRQ's handled by
windows or bios now?
maybe try allocating a certain IRQ to the slot in the BIOS, so that one
isn't used by windows?

Good Luck,
AnthonyR.
