Newbie: "These" DVD recorders!

I understand that it's pretty easy to transfer a VHS or other analog tape to
DVD using a DVD recorder and ending with an unedited (buy playable) DVD.

My question is ....can one take the burned DVD...and in all cases.....copy
it to a computer H/Drive, and then edit it, and "reburn" to DVD-R?

I've been using ADSTech Instant DVD 2....but am hoping there's a more
straight forward way to "port" my significant quantity of old analog
tapes..to DVD...some I want to edit with chapters...some I'm happy just to
transfer from analog to digital, capable of playing on most DVD component
players...

Bottom line...can the output of most DVD recorders be edited after a
transfer from analog (like VHS)? If so...any recommendations for DVD
recorders?

Not quite "all cases", as I've yet to see a decrypter that works
with the newest protection scheme. It's just a matter of time
before one appears though.

But in all other cases you'll be able to take the contents of a
DVD and transfer it to hard drive for editing.

Sorry for the double post..

The BenQ 1640 and NEC 3540 are two preferred drives
currently. I have a 1640 and couldn't be happier.

Movie Factory 4 and Nero Vision Express 3 and Tsunami DVD Author will all
read a DVD onto hard drive. You can then add new menus, and burn to a new
DVD.

These all have free trials....and I highly suggest you try them because some
deal with certain DVD structures better than others.

As for recorders, I like Pioneer 220 series. For an el cheapo you can cross
your fingers and try Ilo from WalMart ($100 US).

The answer isn't cut and dry, depending on whether the dvd recorder uses the
newer more editable DVD-VR mode or the standard DVD-Video Mode
to burn your home movies. The VR discs can be edited on the PC more easily
by many newer software versions and then be burned back to a DVD-R
with more fancy menus etc... But not all DVD Players play the new DVD-VR
format, then there is a difference between, yup, you guessed it, +VR
and -VR,
competing formats, just what we needed to make things easier. LOL
The answer is experiment and see what works for you, but so far I haven't
found an easy solution either.

It depends on what you mean by "edit." If all you want to do is add chapter
points then, yes, it's easy. If you're talking about doing substantive
editing, i.e. adding titles, transitions, special effects, color correction,
etc., then, no, it's not easy -- there are some crude tools available, but
all of them will degrade the video.

So . . . what kind of editing are you planning to do?
