all firewalls have been turned off on the XP home computer. Able to connect
to VPN; but Remote Destop times out and fails to connect. When tried on an
XP Pro computer with same login information there is not problem- it is
specific to the XP Home computer. What could be the problem?

Let's make sure of something..

You are trying to connect to the REMOTE system (Windows XP Professional)
while logged into the LOCAL system (WIndows XP Home Edition) and are unable
to do so?

If that is so - then questions to ask:

- Why would it matter if the firewall was on the Home system or not.. You
are local to it and requesting the information from the remote. It'll pass
through. It is the remote system you need the firewall properly configured
for - so the XP Pro system according to your subject.

- Is there a router/NAT box in between you and the remote system? Is it
properly configured for pass-through for the remote desktop traffic?

- Have you tried grabbing the latest Remote Desktop Client from the
Microsoft web page and "installing" that on the Windows XP Home machine and
using that client to connect to the Remote Windows XP Professional PC?
