My sister wants to create a logo for her friend. She wants to have arced text (curved text) in the logo. Is there any free programs that are able to do this?
I have checked out Paint.Net and Gimp. I don't think either of these will do it.
I do have AutoCAD R14, and a plug-in for arc aligned text. But the learning curve is kind of high for AutoCAD. I'm not all that proficient with it myself (I only use it to create blueprint type drawings - never any kind of graphics). I was hoping to find something that would be easier for her to use.
As I was typing this, I decided to open M$Word. I was surprised to find that it can do arced text (Word Art). But I have never used Word to create drawings before.
Anyone know of other options for her?
She basically wants to copy this logo, with the text changed:
I created some shirts for a club in college using macromedia flash. I just created a static file but was able to do it. Back then they had a 30 day trial period so you might want to see if they still do.
There's going to be a learning curve though.

BAD PUN!!!!
Good call. Didn't catch that.
I have used word art before and for what you're doing it's going to be pretty hard. Basically what you will have to do is create one word art creation over the other one and blend them together. I don't know if you really want to fool with all that .
You could use some sort of drafting program you could create like one letter at a time and then rotate them into a circle. The circles will be simple to create and the rest of it's pretty straightforward so I think if you create the letters one at a time you can do it pretty easy.
Yep, Word Art would be a pain in the ass.
I have decided to use AutoCAD to lay out some guidelines of the shape for her, and create the arced text. No need to do each letter separately though. I have a plug-in that can align the text to an arc.
I'll save the ACAD drawing as a bitmap, and then she can use Paint or whatever to finish it off.
Thanks for the reply though.
Macromedia Flash is something that I have wanted to check out. But I think I'll wait until I have more time to make use of the 30 day trial.
Idealy you'll want something like Photoshop though. Do they have a demo?
With flash I did have to rotate the letters independtly, but the final result looked very good due to the vector scaling.
*goes singing and dancing through the room* computer talk.....la la la....boring......la la la.........
You could be a good woman and get under the desk while I'm working here.
You just missed an opportunity to your your crayons out.
which one?
Here is the finished product (resizing it for internet fuzzed it up a bit):
Compare to the original:
I ended up doing it all for her.
First I used Gimp to rotate the original image so that "Club Keno" was horizontal.
I put that into ACAD. Traced the outlines, and added the arced text. Then I removed the image, and saved the shape/text as a bitmap.
I used Word Art to create the "Club Soper" text.
Opened the ACAD bitmap in Paint.Net. Added the color and the "Club Soper" text. Then trimmed the black border around the logo (so as to not waste a bunch of ink when printing it).
Finally, used Gimp to rotate it back 13° like the original (if Paint.net can rotate less than 90°, I couldn't figure out how).
It looks great. [/calling copyright infringement police]

Thank you. I wasn't totally happy with "Club Soper" - it should be wider. But I got tired of screwing with it.
It's only for personal use, with her friend's basement karaoke machine. So I am not worried about getting sued.

I don't think it can. But I'll be playing with it again I'm sure. If I ever find out how, I'll let you know. I have only used M$ Paint, up 'til now.

Just pulling your chain...........
Paint.net can rotate in small increments, and in 3D!
It's under Layers-->Rotate/Zoom.
Nice job! I might use a softer yellow but that's your call.
OK I found it but how did you rotate around the Z axis.
Below the globe looking thing, it says "Fine Turning". The first enrty under that is "Angle", which turns it on the Z axis.
Thanks, DH. I used that yellow for just to get a sample done, and my sister liked it. I told her that it would only take a few seconds to change it to whatever color she liked, but she told me to leave it. Fine with me.

What globe looking thing????
I don't see it.
I have the rotate you talked about up but don't see fine tuining.
What version are you using? I am using 2.6 Alpha1.
I have 2.1. That is why.............
If you want a program that can sharpen images and re-size BMP and JPG's you can search for " IrfanView " online.
It is free and if it is no longer free email me and I will email the program and the plug-ins for it to you. REAL EASY to use.
I used it for years to re-render detailed pictures of Electronic components taken on the manufacturing floor with my Digital camera.
From 1024 to 800 or 640X480 the picture retains it's aspect ratio and all detail.
You can hit Shift+S and clear images up no problem in fact I let my brother use my digital camera at my wedding last year and he did not wait for the green LED in the reticule before shooting the pictures so 50% of them were out of focus and blurry. I spent 4 hours with IrfanView and I had all the pictures he took burnt into the DVD of the wedding with all the other pictures. In fact the recovered pic's were so good I used IrfanView to re-render all the other folks Digital pictures then made a new DVD of the wedding and made 3 copies of that and put them in the wife's hope chest.
Nice program I had to update to .net framework version 2.0 just to install it. Then I had to search out a solution for Symantec finding a msvcr80.dll error on ten registry items and that was simple just copy that file from the Windows/WinSxS folder to the System32 folder then the errors disappeared in the Norton scan.
In fact updating the .Net Framework yet again....and then fixing the msvcr80.dll seems to have cleaned the system up a bit. All that then MS wants to run some update security patches for .Net Framework and then again for my MS Front Page Express.
All and all well done but that was a real road to travel just to install the paint program :?
I did a custom install and did not let it take full control of all picture types on the P.C I use Adobe for that.
I can't get it to load on my system. I posted on their website forum and they tell me that i have an acess problem to the registry key.
I shut down all spware and firewall but still no luck.
I'll post the crash log maybe somebody can make more sense of it than me.
