I was havinh problems getting a Remote Desktop Connection to work - OK
now but any comments on what we did?
Cheers

------------------ how to --------------------
The steps are as follows (for Windows XP Pro at each end).
(A) At the remote end
1. Create a new user account, eg fred (with a password)
(i) right click on My Computer icon / Manage
(ii) expand Local Users and Groups
(iii) right click on Users and select New User etc
2. Add this user to the Remote Desktop Users group
(i) right click on My Computer icon and select Manage
(ii) expand Local Users and Groups
(iii) select Groups
(iv) double click on Remote Desktop users
(v) add acsvr/geoff (PC name/account name)
3. Allow Remote Desktop Connection access via the Windows Firewall
(i) Control Pannel / Network Connections
(ii) Left Hand Side Menu - Change Windows Firewall Settings
(iii) Exceptions
(iv) tick Remote Desktop
4. Enable Port Forwarding for port 3389 on the router (a Marconi ADSL
Modem/4 port router in this case -see own documentation for own
router)
(i) To access the router you need the IP of the router. To find the IP
of the router use DOS box and ipconfig /all. Under Ethernet Adapter
Local Area Connection you will see the PC's IP under "IP Address" and
the router's IP under "Default Gateway". Write down both IPs.
(ii) Put the IP for the router into Internet Explorer, where you would
normally type in a web site address.
(iii) Access to router - you will need the user name and password
(iv) Go to Virtual Server on the router configuration screen and add
following info for port forwarding
Public Port Start 3389
Public Port End 3389
Private 3389
Port Type TCP/UDP
Host/Server IP address <<the IP of the PC>>
In place of <<the IP of the PC>> enter the PC's IP obtained above
using ipconfig /all as above.
5. Whilst accessing the router configuation note down the WAN IP -
this will be needed by the remote user. An alterantive method for
obtaining teh Internet side router IP is to use Internet Explorer and
http://whatismyip.com and note down the IP starting with 165 ...
6. let the person attempting the connection have this IP value (email
or telephone)
(B) The person attempting to make a connection with the remote PC
1. Allow Remote Desktop Connection access via the Windows Firewall
(i) Control Pannel / Network Connections
(ii) Left Hand Side Menu - Change Windows Firewall Settings
(iii) Exceptions
(iv) tick Remote Desktop
2. Get the Internet side IP for the router from the remote end people
NB if dynamic allocation of IP at the remote end the router IP the
remote end people will need to let you have the Internet side (WAN)
router IP on the day you wish to connect.
3. Run Remote Desktop Connection software and use this IP / click
Connect
4. use the user name and password created by the remote end people/
(A) 1 above.
You should now be connected !
5. NB the user at the remote end PC will be disconnected as the PC
there is not running server software and can only have 1 user logged
on at any one time.
