I hope someone can help me out there, I am about to give up on this.

I have an old Abit LX6 PII 233 with a 20g IBM IC35L020AVER07-0
that I recently installed XP pro SP1 on.
Everything looked fine, it is just that I can't get the disk into UDMA mode.
It will only do PIO mode, so it is terribly slow !
I tried the Abit-site and the Intel site for XP compatible drivers but
couldn't find anything out there.

Is there someone who can help me out with the right driver or perhaps the
Intel Application accelerator for a PII with a 440 chipset ?

do the controllers for the IDE channels (Primary and Secondary) have a
setting on the Advanced tab for DMA If Available? if not, there have been
situations where you have to delete the Primary and Secondary controllers
and reboot. after being re-detected, the controller will usually have the
DMA If Available setting for you to choose.

you do not need that for BX chipset!
Check your Bios configuration; redetect the drive!

Make sure you have the right HD cable.
If it's a UDMA 5 drive you will need an 80pin or ATA 100 cable.
If it's UDMA 3 or less a ATA 33 cable will suffice.
Either way you could have a bum cable. If you have another and do some
swapping that should tell you if it's a cable. Also try setting the jumpers
on the drive to "cable select."

IT doesn't have the BX chipset... It has the 440LX chipset, and
UDMA-33 is the highest it will support.

You do need to make sure that in the BIOS setup, you have the drive
setup for UDMA, and then in XP Pro you need to go into device manager
and select the controller for that drive. In the settings you will
see an iption to use DMA if available, make sure you have it set to
that.

Both IDE controllers do have the setting DMA if availble but my 20G disk
still
remains in PIO mode.
The BIOS POST reports a UDMA mode 2 disk on channel 0.
I have double checked al the relevant BIOS setting. The onyl thing I have
not tried yet is flashing the BIOS to the latest version, but I'm almost
certain that won´t do the trick.

After installing the Intel Accellerator software for the P4 my problems
disappeared. That's why I am looking in the same direction now.
I heard a rumour about a problem with XP SP1 and IDE. Any clues on this ?

I have removed everything else from the controllers (an extra 2G swap disk
as slave on channel 0 and a CD player and a CD writer on Channel 1) to
bypass a possible hardware conflict.

I´m still stuck with a PIO only disk which cripples XP

Any other ideas ?

I found out that it must have something to do with XP pro.

I used Ghost to backup my XP partition and installed a fresh version of
Windows 2000 Pro SP4 without any alteration to my hardware.
The drive is now running in UDMA mode and the performance of the system is
OK.
So my conclusion is: XP is to blame for the disk remaining in PIO mode.

Is there anyone out there that knows of a driver update or system setting
that will allow XP pro to use the UDMA mode properly ?

there is nothing inherent in XP that would prevent UDMA mode for an IDE
controller. either XP detected the channel as supporting only a lower mode
or detected a problem on the channel that prevented it from enabling a
higher mode. in the latter case, usually there will be messages logged in
Event Viewer to indicate the trouble.

there has been many cases where XP incorrectly set up an IDE channel and by
deleting it and allowing XP to redetect the channels, things would usually
get straightened out but not if there was a problem with the channel or
cable or drive to begin with. the fact that you could install another OS
would tend to point to the OS being confused as opposed to a problem with
hardware but anything is possible.
