I have an older monitor with side speakers, and a built
in microphone. Play sound, Ok. Microphone is not muted.
I followed the directions which stated to check
microphone instead of the sound drivers, nothing there.
I've tried everything, I can't get it to work; and it is
hooked up properly. Guess I'll have to buy one.

Have you ensured that the mic jack is inserted into the correct port on the
sound card?
