I hesitate to post these questions as I have witnessed the carnage
whenever anyone tries to get HL for free.

I own two copies of HL. One for me and one for my son. I have set up
my spare computer in order to have a dedicated DoD server. I guess it
has to be on the Steam network. Do I have to buy another copy of HL in
order to get the server up and running, or can I just download the
server software for free? The server would not have anyone playing
through it, it would only host.

I am not trying to get around an laws, I honestly don't know and don't
want to go out and spent 24 bucks on another copy if it is not required.

Thank you.

I am not certain, but I think you can create another Steam account and
download the dedicated server for free.

By "create another steam account", do you mean that I have to have
another cd key? I own two cd keys/steam accounts. I would like to run
a dedicated server on my spare computer and be able to have both
accounts playing on it. So should I go to the store and buy another
copy of HL?

Thank you.

That is right - ded server is free. You will need internet connection
for the Steam version I believe. I am still running v1.5 (WON) on our
LAN insecure mode for work staff after hours only.

See, nothing to worry about. It is only if you want to
hack/cheat/pirate that I would point you in the direction of tubgirl :0)

If you want to have one server and one PC playing on it, you need 2 keys. If
you want one server and two PC's playing on it, you need 3 keys.

No, you don't need a key to create Steam account.

Hold on. Have you downloaded the ded server package from steampowered
and tried to install before you spend that money? I think you will find
you don't need CD keys for ded server only. It is only if you want to
/play/ on that box you need key.

Where do I get it? I have downloaded the updater and followed the
instructions here:

http://tinylink.com/?mFaJdXq0j6

But I don't have the actual server........

Thank you.
