My old system is going to my son and I believe I'd like to build a
system with the Abit IC7 Max 3 board. My two previous Abit boards
never gave me problems so I'd like to stick with Abit.

My primary interest is in stability at this time. Looking at
Monarch Computer I am offered a range of memory options [that they
will test before shipping]. I'd like to get 512 meg of RAM at this
time and to do so with 2-256 meg chips. I have twice had memory chips
go bad on me. The first time was a single 512 chip and I was down for
almost a week. I managed to get 2 -256 to replace it and again lost a
chip but could keep running. Both chips were from Crucial Memory.

Here are the options from the drop-down window when I chose the
Abit IC7 Max 3 board:

I've had excellent results with Corsair on the IC7 series board... I've
used both XMS3500 at 5:4 and XMS4400 at 1:1

yeah, got a fair increase, went from the low 5100's to the 5800's in Sandra
2K4 and I know I have plenty of ram overhead at this stage. as it is, the
CPU isn't happy going much higher unless I find a better way to cool it.
it's stable when I go higher with it but I start to get on the warm side and
that's even with a Zalman CNPS7000CU cooler. some heat starts building up
in the case even with a bunch of case cooling going on and that just tells
me that I'm really putting off some wattage... normally, I don't have a
heat build-up problem... had to raise the core voltage a little to get it
to go higher and that, of course, is a contributing factor. currently at
247 yielding a little over 3450 on a 2.8c so not so bad...

5800s... one thing for sure, intel has an amazing memory interface
compared to amd. That's 2.1 times my 187 fsb athlon setup.

Hmmm, ok. I had not realized the current state of the art was hitting
the power dissipation wall so hard. I wonder if they will ever start
directly coupling the cpu heatsink to the case. A 6 by 10 plate could
dissipate a lot of heat.

They have to have that, since their processors are more dependant on
high memory bandwidth, than AMD's.

I've had the same thought, but the issue is the coresize - there are
no materials (except diamond), which will dissipate hundreds of Watt
of heat from a core that small (usually ~100 mm²), and still keep the
core at a reasonable temperature.

Besides, there needs to be a layer of iron(-alloy) to lower EMI
emission, somewhere between the CPU and the outside of the case.
