Microsoft Optical PS2 Mouse

I have installed a new Microsoft IntelliMouse Optical on my XP Pro system
using the PS2 connector. The computer now will restart without warning and
produces a error message that I have not been able to ascertain as of yet.
When I install the original Microsoft Scroll mouse the problem goes away. I
have read the below article, but have determined that there is no
Intellipoint software installed on the system.
