I've recently upgraded to XP, and now I cannot access my second hard drive. It is listed as a local drive, (my first hard drive is listed as a local drive as well) when I click on it,..I receive a message,. not formatted, do I want to format now. I want to retain all the info on that hard drive. It was basically used to store pics, etc. I'm not sure what to do,..any suggestions?... thanks..

Let me guess, it is a W-D drive? There is a problem with
their firmware.

Under your previous operating system (98 or ME, I assume?), was the second
hard drive directly recognized by the motherboard's BIOS or was it necessary
to do some sort of tricky shifting of indices of sectors to get it recognize
the whole drive. Some disk manufacuter's provide such software as part of
their installaion package, so you hardly even know it is there. Yet, if you
swich to XP, that same software will not work. New software is likely
available from the disk vendor, but it may require reformating and
re-installing.

Suggestions: (1) Determine the maximum size hard drive that your BOIS can
handle directly. Read the motherboard manual, or check with the support
site for the motherboard (or the PC if a major brand like Dell, gateway,
Compaq, etc). (2) If the max size is larger than the second drive, ignore
what I wrote above. (3) But, if it smaller, then seek help from (a) the PC
motherboard or PC maker, or (b) from the hard drive maker.
