Hey guys, Apologies for posting "computer talk" down here, but I have this friggin HP scanner problem and can't remember which way to re-install it. I have a HP Scanjet 6300C (old but excellent), have lost the reinstal disk long time ago (downloaded the latetest drivers/software), so now I want to uninstall the old software and reinstall. But HP is funny, their instruction don't say wheither to connect the scanner before the software is installed then reboot ... or to d/l and install the software, reboot and hot plug the usb plug - I remember it was weird long time ago and HP's dorections don't say (I suspect on purpose). Anybody know the right sequence for this scanner reinstall? Thanks. :?
Most of the time, old USB devices want the software installed first, the reboot. Hot plug the scanner and Windows should start to install the drivers.
Or, if you plug the scanner, and you're running XP, you may not need any drivers at all, as the scanned may show up in "my computer" and you can use it right from there.
Uninstall all previous drivers and hp software. Run the installation software you d loaded. DO NOT PLUG IN SCANNER YET. Midway through install HP's software will ask you to plug in the scanner,do it. The windows hardware wizard will then find the scanner and install the correct drivers. Mission accomplished.
P.S this should not be in this section, get a mod to move it for you.
When I went to the XP operating system I discovered that HP was not going to support my scanjet 4200c with new drivers for XP. Had to get a new scanner.

Did that ... no prompt to to plug in ... and when finished ... no software in Add/Remove ...
I've got the updated disc that supports XP ... it worked fine until today. It does support XP ... they've updated drivers, button fixes, etc ... just went south today ... but it seems to light up and all ... just get that error mssg as I posted in the above img.
I've tried every available USB port on the board ... may be the scanner firmware ... which may mean it's shot ... I might try HP Monday ... If I yell loud enough, they may waive the "out-of-warranty" fee. I recall it was a weird set up last time too. Had to make seperate folders on the OS drive, etc. But nothing about it in the instructions ... HP's been like that in my experience.
I haven't reinstalled it yet ... but when I got the error mssg - that's the 1st place I looked ... and no, it was not there, nor in the scanner/cameras directory in the control panel ... that's why I'm thinking it might have "passed away" ... (may HP RIP ... bastages)
if you plug the device, and nothing show up in device manager, then it might be dead.. Driver or not, when new devices are plugged in, it should at least have a ! to notice new hardware.
So either the scanner is dead or there is something wrong with your computer. Can you try another computer?

Oh.. I guess that you did not bother to check if power was actually plugged to the scanner.. happen often with noob that cannot post in the right thread...

Just blow all the HP drivers out reboot and plug in the scanner it should show in XP (systems tray) that it is building a driver if it does not show that it is building a driver then get a new scanner.
I never load my USB scanner driver I just leave it plugged in from the XP install onward then pull the Scanner and camera wizard out of start programs and it uses the XP drivers. In fact I can force the scanner up and past 1200 dpi that I never could do in win98 with this scanner. USB1 as well.
BIOS must be set to use both USB1/USB2 it is an option on most new MoB.
OMG!!! you're a MOD.....you of all ppl should know better!
*sigh* okay I'll allow it....but just this once and just because it's you....if it were anyone else I'd have to kill them.....you realize how lucky you are right now?
