I have a AMD Athlon XP 1800 64Mb GeForce 4 running windows
XP pro. The computer keeps restarting itself which is very
annoying. It mainly does this while playing games but also
occasionally while Im on the desktop. I have tried
formatting the hard drive and reinstalling windows but has
not fixed the problem. Please Help.

What temperature is your CPU? Your memory or power supply could also be a
potential problem. Try installing motherboard information software which
can indicate high temperatures or voltage flucuations. Are there any items
in the event log which could shed some light. It could also be your video
card. Does it have the latest drivers?

also it sounds like the symptoms for the blaster worm

turn on your firewall in the network control panel applet.
go to control panel network look for the connection that you use to access the internet (i.e. if cable/dsl your nic or a usb broadband modem etc... for dial up your dial up connection) then click it and then click on the properties button then the advanced tab and check the box for internet connection firewall

then go to windows update and DOWNLOAD CRITICAL UPDATES.

these are critical anymore and not just hype with every virus writer and script kiddie out there trying to get credit card info, pay pal info, porn logins etc..... and all sorts of info on how to obtain them freely available with a google search. if you don't do regular patching and updates and take steps to protect your assests...... well you get the idea.

and if you've done this already good for you, it is my standard warning to all

also get a virus scanner if you already haven't there are some decent trial/freeware versions out there such as panda and avg

also an anti spyware/adware utility or 2 is a good idea for your privacy check out adaware from lavasoft and spybot from ?? (sorry don't remember company off the top of my head)

and once again if you already did this cool, it is also a warning to all who may read not just yourself.

other possible causes are memory issues related to faulty ram, a need to update a driver, software conflict (look into recently installed software and uninstall one at a time and see if the reboot goes away after some testing over time) etc...
