If I get a new computer with Windows ME, is it possible to go back to my usual Windows 98 Second Edition? How would I come about doing this? Is there some kind of "downgrade" needed?

Yes there is... if you got your Win98 SE disk, what you do is boot to dos, format the hard-drive, and re-install win98. Make sure you have your CD-Rom drivers on your Win98 floppy before you do that, so it can run your install off the CD.

There isn't much of a point in getting a system with Windows ME preinstalled if you want Windows 98/98SE.

Check who your buying the computer from, because usually when you remove the pre-installed (supported) OS and you install another OS then it will VOID the warranty, make sure you check.

Ive tried installing 98 over me about six times before i finally realized it impossible. he could find a program that will transfer all data but the os onto the me drive but that would take two seperate drives or partition the drive into two drives and use partion manager to partion and then erase the me partion when he is done

Boot from a Win98SE bootable floppy (keep Sys, Fdisk, Scandisk, Deltree, etc. all handy here).

1) use Deltree to Delete the C:\WINDOWS directory (make sure you save your Outlook Express folders, address books, and any other configuration files).

2) from the Booting floppy, type SYS C: to make C: bootable in Win98SE.

3) Now reboot from C:\ (or from Floppy if you don't know how to load your CD-ROM Drivers), you will get to the C:\> prompt.

4) Goto your Win98's CD-ROM's path and run "SETUP.EXE /P f" to install Win98SE.
