The Northbridge fan on my IS7 board has started getting unbeleivably
loud.

Frustrated, I simply unplugged the its fan. ahhh.

BIOS doesnt seem to be complaining but the box isnt under load either.
Its just a rarely-used web development workstation. Running Suse so I
cant run Abit tools.

All I'm worried about is safety - is it safe to do this? I dont
overclock and the case is well ventilated with 3 fans - front, back,
and top.

I'm assuming that in the worst case the BIOS will simply shutodwn the
system. I just dont want to hurt anything.

Its an older I really dont care enough about this box to go through the
hassle of pulling the MB to replace it with a heatsink.

whit what you have said about having decent case airflow, I don't see an
issue, personally. you can find replacement fans at various sites out there
and Abit had links on their web sites at one point to obtain a replacement
fan.

with what you are using the system for and with no overclocking, good
airflow, shouldn't be an issue.

Still do:
http://www.abit-usa.com/abitparts/

The part is "free" (yeah, right)... a US$6.00 handling fee and shipping
starting at $5.00 (ground).

I unplugged mine on my IC7 for a while and had no issues but I plugged
it back in again and am using a Fanbus so I can run the fan at low rpm
as that causes no noise and gives me a little cooling advantage.

I just put an IS7 together, and can't believe the noise! Brand new and
running at 6000rpm = way too loud. It's coming off this weekend, and a $10
Zalman passive NB heatsink is going on.
