Compaq 7000z, 1.2ghz AMD Athlon, 256 ram, D-Link 530TX.
I bought a new nic card, put it in a different slot,
changed cables, changed ports on the router, nothing
works. I can't get internet. Do I have to change hard
drives? or motherboards? My daughter pinged from this one
to that one but wouldn't ping from that one to this one.
This one is a Compaq 8000z Athlon64.

Did you try upgrading the network card drivers?

I bought a new D-Link 530TX card and the box said the
drivers were for XP. I used the disk that came with the
new D-Link card.

Same thing happened to me. Turned out to be a
conflict with my video card, when XP,
for unknown reasons, saw two of them when there was
only one.
Disabling the phantom video driver was the
only solution, since removing it didn't work
(it would just get reinstalled when XP rebooted after
uninstall).
After that, internet access was no prob'. (Something
to do with IRQ assignments.)

Go into your device manager and see if anything's funky
like that.

Nothing duplicated there. Display adaptor is NVIDIA
GeForce2 MX. IRQ 03 .... Ah! I have 3 things on IRQ3. The
Nvidia GeForce2 MX, PCTEL Platinum v90 modem (which dials
and sounds like it connects but then it seems to fail. I
tried to install aol 9 to try to connect with dial-up and
it popped up with it needed more info to connect but it
was the area code window and the area code was there.)
and Texas Instruments OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host
Controller. Ok. How do I change an irq setting in xp? I
haven't played with irq's in years.
Also, I do have a duplicate in irq 11. 2 listings for VIA
Rev 5 or later USB Universal Host Controller. I have
usb's on front and rear. Are there 2 controllers for that?
IRQ's 2 & 7 look to be empty & there is nothing above 11.

Actually, I'm not sure myself how to change IRQ settings
since all I had to do was disable the offending driver.
I do know that typing "regedit" in the Run command line
(off of the Start button) will get you the registry editor
(where that sort of thing is done)
but after that my knowledge is a bit foggy, and I am
no longer competent to offer advice :-}
There should, to my knowledge, only be one USB controller
for all the USB ports, but then I've only ever had the
standard two in the back.

Used restore disks to reinstall ME. Still no internet.
Next, format C and clean install of xp. After that?
Sledgehammer?
