I need a half way house solution for my Dad who lives in Cyprus, he needs a
faster system, but is starting with the CPU and wishes to keep with Socket A
processor for the moment because of the cost (he's retired). So I now need
to know if I can purchase and send him the XP3200 with minimal fuss for him
to install.

TIA,

Marcus

Should be able to, but it will only run as a 1700+ (11x133) if it works.
It'd be nuch better (and cheaper) to send him a 2400+ XP-M which has a
default 133MHz FSB (266FSB) and then he can clock it up to as fast as he
wants since it's not multiplier locked. The safest bet would be a 2400+,
or 2600+/266. Either of these should work for sure.

Thanks for the reply, I understand the other options, but I am lead to
believe the processor jump is the first in a stage set of updates.

Hi Wes,

Will the "Sempron" work on this board?

I'm beginning to think it's about time the 'oldman' looked at doing a full
kit change, trouble is he's retired and I don't have the spare cash either.

It should, but it will still only run at 133MHz which will make it run at
only 2/3 the already slowed down speed. A Duron 1600 or 1800 with a
default 133MHz FSB will run at default speeds which would work a lot
better than a Sempron which will only run at 4/5 it's normal speed. You'd
need a Sempron with a 12 and 13.5 multipler to match the speed of the 1600
and 1800 Duron. I still think the best options for that board are what I
wrote below.
