hardware configuration

Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware (More info?)

i once heard that with windows xp professional you can
only change your hardware configuration 3 times before it
stops recognizing whatever u've changed past that
limit...now i don't know if this is true, or if there's
any way to fix it...but if there is i'd sure like to hear
your reply...thanks in advance

    urban legend
A;; versions of XP monitor the hardware configuration when
installed, if you make changes you may need to reinstall to
have the correct drivers for the new hardware. Furthermore,
WPA will see the changes as a new computer when certain
items or combinations are changed. Thus you may have to
reactivate and if there appears to be an instance of the OS
being installed on two computers, you'll have to call the
    800 number to get authorized.

If you have an OEM CD you cannot move it to another
computer, but you can repair a system.
