The nVidia firewall blocks Norton's Liveupdate unless it is turned
off. However I suspect there is an obscure setting that will permit
Liveupdate to operate while the Firewall is on. Anyone know what it
is please?

Try looking in 'Firewall, advanced configurations, application' you can
enable/disable if it's listed in and outbound

Thanks for tip, but it is not there. I suspect it is communicating
through a specific port that is blocked that is causing the problem.

OK, try running the update and look at the log which hopefully will show the
blocking warning and which port the program was trying to access, then you
can go to UPD/TCP option and enable it

I had to do this for file sharing in local network

Been away. There is no log entry showing what has been blocked, and
this is very strange.
