Hi - I have a home built PC running Windows XP SP2. It uses an AMD CPU on
an ABIT "KD7A" motherboard.

The problem I am having is with a 16X DVD +/- Burner which I can access from
Windows Explorer right after a new re-boot. Then it goes into a state where
I cannot access it form Windows Explorer. I cannot read an Audio CD, a data
CD or DVD from the drive. (It is an IDE DVD burner.) However, Windows
Explorer shows the DVD drive but when I click on it to read the CD or DVD in
it - nothing happens....

I have un-installed the DVD driver, and installed it a few times. I have
used the Windows XP CD to repair the Windows XP installation, because I
thought that XP might have been corrupted and needed repair. However, the
problem with the DVD Burner still comes up.

At the times that I cannot access the DVD Burner from Windows, I can access
it using Realplayer and Nero but cannot access using DVD Shrink IT.

I have had this problem for some time, it has bothered me but I could not
find a solution to it. I would greatly appreciate help in getting this
problem resolved.

Ted,

Check that it is jumpered correctly. Make sure you have the blue end of
the IDE ribbon to the board. Try a different power connector. Do you
have enough power to run the DVD drive. Are there any other odd behaviors?

Hi,
I have the right end (blue end of the IDE Cable) inserted into the
motherboard. I have a power supplier that is rated for 450 Watts, so I would
think I have enough power. I cannot check the jumpering but I believe it is
set to CSEL. I will try to check it later since it means taking the drive
out ....

Thanks,

Ted M.

Greetings
Have you ran a virus scan? There are a couple of viruses that cause
CD/DVD's to act funny and not work.

I am having the same problem. I reloaded my system with Windows XP SP1
and then installed SP2. Before the reload I was only using XP SP1 and
had no problems. Now I have exactly the same thing your describing.
I have heard of a virus doing that but from what I am told you lose
your CD/DVD immediatly on bootup. I can use mine for hours before it
happens. I also installed Norton after my build and did a scan and
had no viruses. My guess would be an SP2 problem cause I have yet
work on a system that SP2 hasnt whacked something and you have to fix
it. I have a Plextor PX-708A.

Have any of you guys recently installed a game with the dreaded starforce
protection? If so, try removing the starforce drivers, as they can screw
your system up quite a bit :(
