NF8-V and RAID - software or hardware?

Hi all, I built this new system:

ABIT NF8-V motherboard
(2) Maxtor 160GB SATA drives
RAID 0 (mirrored) setup via BIOS.

Question: Is the on-board RAID on this motherboard controlled by
hardware or software?
Why do I have to install the NForce drivers to get the raid array to
synchronize?
This system will be a Linux server. I put XP on it to test, and it
seems the NForce software is required to handle the RAID functions. I
want the hardware to control the raid array without the os having to
handle it.

With Fedora core 4 installed, I did not notice the drives syncing up.
I may not have waited long enough.
Any pointers? If I setup the raid in BIOS and leave Fedora on top of
it, will the mirrors be maintained by the hardware, or is software
required? I know I can do software raid on linux, but I bought this
motherboard for hardware-supported raid.

Thanks in advance!
-Steve in Phx.
