XP to Retest Bad Sectors

Hi,
I had a previous hard disk that had 4k worth of bad sectors. When I
got my nice shiny new IBM replacement I cloned the entire thing
across and resized the partition, but of course, it took with it the
MFT and the "record" of the bad sectors.

How do I get XP to retest the sectors that have been marked out as
bad but aren't? Is there any 3rd party tool anyone knows of that
could do this?

Click start/run and type (no quotes) "cmd", you then will get the Command Prompt. At the flashing cursor, type (again, no quotes) "chkdsk", and let it run. this is a read only command, but it will give you a run down of whats going on. If you have errors, it will say. Then what you do is type "chkdsk <space> /r" (again, no quotes), and it will request that you run a repair at the next boot, simply type Y and click OK, then reboot.

Typically, bad sectors are caused by physical damage to a drive, but not always. Post back with results!

Hi Tom, I did previously try that command as a matter of course, but
it hasn't retested the "bad sectors" which aren't bad.

The last lot were just caused by a jank old drive that was passed
it's days. You have to remember it's just the sector map that says
the sectors are bad on this new disk, they are not actually bad.
