Many thanks, Mr Rich Barry

The solutions given in winXPXchange solved the problem of chkdsk running at
every reboot.

For the other problem of icons not loading consistently in the system tray,
I am using the 'Classic Start Menu' and the Customize button on the Taskbar
tab of the Taskbar and Start Menu Properties dialog box is not available
(grayed out). Will change to Windows XP start menu and see if this solves
the problems.

Rgds.
