Error log filling up

I have a new Pentium III 1G laptop and every time I turn it on when it starts to boot and gets to the place you can enter bios it suddenly beeps loudly and screen goes black and then it continues to boot and runs okay, I reckon. The problem is that when I first got it it said this system has recovered from a serious system error and to send a report to microsoft, which I did. This error note finally disappeared but I noticed in my error log that every time I have started the laptop that ACPI is trying to write to an illegal port. THE LOG IS FILLING UP!!!!!!Of course, tech support was not help. Prostar. Any ideas out there. Windows XP Home Edition is OS. Preinstalled. Should I reformat and do a fresh install? Any ideas helpful appreciated.
