Is there a way to "force" a different network on this phone (using some sort
of keypad combination)?
For example, when I had a Verizon (CDMA) phone, I could "force" the phone to
use a non-Verizon SID to make & receive calls in areas where Verizon was
weak.
In my area, Cingular has roaming agreements with Einstein PCS & ATTWS, both
of which I have roamed onto at one point or another (dialed 611 to find out
who's system I was on).
Being new to GSM, I'm not sure if this is even an option with GSM or not.

With Cingular, the option to select the network is disabled within the SIM
card. When you move outside of you calling area, where Cingular is not
available, then you'll roam on a different network. I've never been able to
select the network with Cingular.

It can't be the sim card, 'cause I can get my nokia 6340i to pick networks
and it is the same sim card I got with my first P.O.S. free phone back
in '91.
Doesn't cingular lock certain menu items out of the phones they sell?

I'm pretty sure it's the SIM card because when I put my T-Mobile SIM in the
same phone (x427) I'm able to access the networks selection menu. That menu
selection is not available (grayed out) with the Cingular SIM.

Well, it does sound like it, but I just got my V400 today,
I moved my sim over to it, and I can pick cingular, att or t-mobile, so I
don't know why you can't. Looks like a call to the old cust service
people is in your future.
I am in WA state, all GSM if that matters, too. some things are
a bit different over here.
