Hitboxes are areas around parts of a model that record information about what
kind of object hit them and how much damage was done. Because people have
different connections and therefore latency and bandwidth, the game contains
netcode which adjusts the position of the hitboxes so that what you see on
screen, which could be different to what is on someone else's screen because of
differing amounts of server updates received and processed, so that you should
be able to fire at the head of the model you see and hit it's hitbox even though
that person, from their point of view has moved.

It does a good job of making people with a 56k modem be able to play with people
on a T3 but it does have many many bugs. you just have to deal with it and wait
for an update that may make it better.
