various problems with P4R800-VM

I bought the P4R800-VM motherboard along with a Celeron 2.4 GHz processor
and 256 MB of RAM.

I installed Windows XP Pro on it and it was freezing frequently. I spoke
with the technician where I bought the motherboard from and he recommend
flashing the BIOS to the latest version.

I did that using the utility found on the CD. The computer rebooted, but
then after rebooting, I lose the keyboard. Nothing responds when I am in
Windows, not even the Num Lock or Caps Lock keys respond. It's just a
regular Logitech keyboard with a PS2 connector. As soon as I restart, I
can press the DEL key to get into the BIOS settings, which is kind of
strange.

I have now tried four different keyboards with the same result. This is
also my second motherboard, as I thought the first one was defective.
Sometimes the keyboard doesn't work as soon as Windows XP starts, and
sometimes, the keyboard will work for a few minutes and then it loses
functionality. I have even tried reloading Windows XP Pro twice and the
problem is still happening.

I am at a loss here as to what else I can do. Would anyone have any idea
at all? Please... Thank you so much!

a) press F8 like crazy during boot up...Hoping the kb works long enough to
give you an option for safe mode.
Does the keyboard work normally during safe mode?
Could be a corrupt install. Doubt it, but..

b)
At least some Asus cd's come with a copy of free dos (or something similar).
Try going into the bios, change it (if it isn't already) so the cd is the
first thing to boot in the boot order.
Floppy as second, hard drive is third.
Of course, make sure the asus cd is in the drive

If you have a win 98 start up disk or a boot floppy, that'd work good too.

Anyway, when you get to the dos prompt, does the keyboard work? Try it for a
good five minutes whacking at all the keys you feel like.
If there is something wrong, you should see it in Dos as well, i'd think

c)
find simmtester on the internet. Using another machine, create a simm tester
on a floppy.
Test the ram by booting to this floppy. Easy to use menu.
