Do you already have the Windows 7 DVD, or will you have to go out and buy it? There is a Windows 7 Enterprise 90-Trial version that you can download for free from Microsoft. Do you have a spare hard drive for your laptop? If you do, you can swap your current hard drive with the spare, and try it out.
In addition to whether you have a hardware problem, you need to be able to find Windows 7 drivers for all the hardware devices in the laptop. Sometimes that's not possible, but if you install the evaluation version of Windows 7, and you can't find all the drivers, you just put the original hard drive back in the laptop, and your back where you started.
