Canon Printhead

I've really enjoyed my Canon i850, but now the printhead is clogged,
and Canon Canada's support has determined I need a new one. It is a
month past warranty. Have a request in, but so far, Canon Canada has
not given me price or availability. Anyone know how much the i850
printhead costs, from Canon?

What kind of ink have you been using?

I've had my i850 well over a year, and it hasn't clogged once after
putting through some 9+ sets of ink tanks. I used Canon original inks
for the first two sets, and then started using AtlanticInkjet ink to
refill the original tanks.

I can't help you there.

But if Canon won't honour the warranty, then you can try cleaning the
printhead nozzles by letting it stand in a shallow bowl with an ammonia
and warm water solution before buying a new one. It certainly can't hurt
at that point.

Bill, Tony, thanks for the response. My query was as to the price, as
Canon hasn't let me know. I should have detailed what happened, and
what steps I took, though :).

Ordered the printer new last end of Feb.; received beginning of March.
Loved it; printed and printed colour pictures and mixed documents, till
the colour tanks ran out, all at nearly the same time. Black tank still
three-quarters full. Then, I didn't print any more with it for a few
months. I have a laser that does most of my printing. Last week,
installed new set of colour tanks, tried printing. Colours all print
fine. Black won't print. Print nozzle check pattern, head alignment
pattern--all colours print fine. Black squares of mixed colour print.
But no black ink print.

First, I tried just cleaning the head with Windex. No luck. Next, I
let the head soak in Windex for five hours. No good. Then I let it
soak in alcohol overnight (12 hours). [Alcohol is what the Canon guy
recommended--he had never heard of using Windex :).] Still no joy.
Finally, I boiled water, poured it into a dish, placed the business
end of the head in (it was no longer boiling, just very hot), and
gently agitated for five minutes. No go.

That brings us up to date. Believe the head is dead [well, shot :)].
So, trying to find out cost of head, and decide whether to buy new
head, or new printer.

Don't give up on it so quickly. My original test S-820 has needed a new head
for the last year and repeatedly reports a paper blockage. Either the latest
cleaning fluids - or , Windex (Windolene UK) a mild ammonia solution can
ease out the offending crud which blocks the ink flow. I always whip mine
out and rinse it out a few times. Stand it in a shallow saucer overnight.
The ammonia acts as a solvent for dye based inks. Dry it on a tissue after
treatment and replace. It has worked many times for our customers.

Whoop s that's pretty exhaustive. The only prices I remember are a few
months back of $70 US dollars.

I seem to remember about that same price too. I don't know if it is
worth buying the head or just get a new printer.

Ya, at 70USD you might as well pick up a Canon i860 (I got mine for 150CDN
or about 110USD).

Thanks for the replies, guys :). I suspect you are right, and at that price
a new i860 would be in order--don't know how the i860 differs from the i850,
but, ***Good News***, I called Canon Canada again today, and after he talked
with a supervisor, he called me back and agreed to replace the printhead! I
need to fax him a copy of my receipt tomorrow, then they will ship it (I'm
guessing next week). Way to go Canon!

Okay, I faxed the receipt Friday about 6:00pm. AND, the replacement printhead
was delivered today (Monday) 11:45am! The packing slip said ground shipping,
but the package had an 'Air' sticker on it. Now, that's service :). Thumb's
up for Canon. The customer service guy I talked to was polite, professional,
and got the job done.

The replacement was in a sealed foil pouch, but when I removed it, there was
moisture on it, and dabbing it revealed cyan ink (possibly other inks as well).
So, suspect it is out of a returned printer or something. The packing slip
listed the printhead cost at $60 CDN, but the price of a new one could be higher.
Anyway, installed it and it works fine. Alignment is great. Problem solved.
Thanks, Canon!
