Besides the price, what's the difference between the old USB cables
and the newer 2.0 USB variety? Is it worth purchasing the more
expensive 2.0 cables?

It's a compliance issue. Internally, the cables are essentially the same,
but the 2.0 cables are certified at the 2.0 speeds. You might get lucky and
purchases a 1.1 certified cable that actually works at 2.0 speeds, but it's
not worth the chance.

Get USB 2.0 cables from www.cyberguys.com at very reasonable
prices. They have a large selection of lengths, connector
types and other cables for Firewire, too.
They have a good catalog also.

Hi,
USB1.1 = 10MB per second
USB2.0 = 480MB per second
If you don't have USB 2.0 devices and your PC don't have USB 2.0 root hubs, you should not use USB 2.0 cable as it is wasting money.

I understand the differences. I have both USB 2.0 ports and a USB 2.0
hub. It's the cable between the hub and the PC that I was concerned
about. The one that came with the hub was too short.

Hi Sam -
The difference between USB 1.1 cables and USB 2.0 is the amount of shielding
in the cable to reduce signal "cross-talk". Poorly shielded cables will
enable the signals from one line to potentially interfere with other lines
in the same cable and, potentially, with nearby cables from other devices.
Look for a cable that's rated for USB 2.0 or labeled "Enhanced USB".

If it works the way it's hooked up now and you don't have any complaints,
why waste the money?
