When I try to connect to a server, it stops connecting at the "sending
client info" stage. The computer has not crashed because I can move the
mouse and exit if I want.

why

Because there is an issue with your account or your account has been reported as
malicious i.e. a file on your system has malicious content -- that last patch
gave the steam engine the ability to look into ones system files!! Oh, and guess
what!?! If they find ANYTHING that they have determined malicious you get you
ass canned and guess what else they don't have to tell you - how can they do
this you ask! Simply because they can!!! - Happen to read their on-line gaming
policy!!!!!

Try restarting steam. It worked for me.
