we have a laptop that keeps changing from shared to open in network
authentication between sites which means we have to keep changing the
settings to connect to the wireless point. all sites are shared
authentication. we run netswitcher but there are no settings for this in
there .

Well you are more secure with an open system, so go with it and change it
all to open.
