Hi,
I have a USB2 multi-card reader, which does Compact Flash, Memory Stick and
SD cards.
Compact flash is VERY fast, just like a hard disk, but SD is VERY slow to
start doing anything (ie, it takes ~1 min to open up in explorer). Once it
gets going, it is fast (ie, if I copy a big file, the transfer rate once it
gets going is acceptable).
To be technical, I would describe the SD card reading as having a high
latency, but a fast transfer rate.
Can anyone reccomend a USB SD card reader which is quick to get going? is it
a general problem with SD cards that they are slow..

Thank you. I didnt install any drivers with it - it uses WinXP native
drivers.
I will pick up a SanDisk reader then i was just checking that its was not
a general SD card problem
cheers

George,
I have Win XP and the Sandisk reader. Make sure that you install the drivers
that come with the unit. I had a lot of problems with the unit until I
installed the drivers. I still have one problem in that if the reader is
attached when I reboot the computer it will never boot. It apparently has a
problem with having the Sandisk installed because if I remove it the box
boots just fine.

George,
I use the Sandisk 8-1 USB card reader and have gone to pretty much all
Sandisk "Ultra-II" (66X) as those are the only ones that can keep up with my
camera. In transferring files I get about 12 MB/s or a 15MB compressed file
takes about 2 seconds to open from either card, a 3 MB file less then a
second. Your SD should not be that slow. Is it formatted as FAT, FAT16 or
FAT32 ? That can cause some slowdowns, but sounds like a corrupt file on the
card or maybe your car reader is acting up.
