Interesting topic this. For the record, I answered no, although I've not been in that position first hand. A mate, well, ex mate, was and gave in. Although he was, and still is by all accounts, a first class prick, it can be an easy way out. Rather than stand up and face the music, he backed down and gave in.
if I was ever getting blackmailed, I'd dig up the dirt on the person that was blackmailing me and that way it voids the original blackmail and life can continue as it always was.....
are you upset because I'm blackmailing you with that pic of you dressed up as Cher?
I think it would depend on the situation. In some cases I might, in others I might just do what qoop would, and in others I'd probably do something really nasty to the person.
Odds are I'd never put myself in a situation that would warrant me to have to give in.
Overall, no.. but depending on how severe the blackmail was.. If it could cause major problems if someone found out something per say.. and cause more harm to someone aside from myself, I may..
It really depends what is at stake.. I mean, come on..
I'm staying out of this, I have my reasons and will reply once I see some useful answers.

I can't answer this one sensibly without knowing what the case at hand is (and I understand you might not want to share it).
Fact with blackmail is that it is a simple business proposition. If you can buy the actual goods while being sure that no copying of evidence/information was done, then it is a one time deal and you can do the math whether it's worth it or not. Of course there isn't too much around anymore (certainly not if we're talking information) that isn't copyable.
If you cannot get your hands on the goods, then you can be sure the blackmailing party will come back for more. Unless you can pay off with reasonable amounts each time, this is usually a situation where things will get out of hand sooner or later so my advice would be not to give in, unless buying time will provide you the means to get out of your predicament.
In case you're being offered "protection" for your bed shop franchise, I would offer them a comfy booby trapped waterbed as your first payment. Protection racket schemes are kind of hard to get out of (nasty business), so in case you do not own the shop, I would discuss it with your management.
If you're not blackmailed for money but another "favor" I would not give in. In fact you may have enough leverage through not doing what is asked, to come to another settlement. If not, paragraph 2 applies (about not getting your hands on the goods).
I think someone would have to be pretty bold to blackmail someone. You're literally cornering someone and when you corner someone they're bound to do something they normally wouldn't.
Someone would have to be affiliated with the mafia or some other shady organization to really get away with blackmailing me. Either that or they'd have to be stupid and ask for something that I didn't mind giving up.
Nothing good comes out of it.. I mean, blackmail has two sides to it.. they might have the upperhand if they have some good dirt on you..but if they let it out, then you have the upperhand on them because you get to call them out for blackmailing you..
Bare handed wearing mittens and no shoes.. I've taken down several polar bears.. 3 actually, at the same time too.. in a blizzard with wolves watching.. and little imps throwing little spears at me.
